Broken Windows by Wayne Horse

The amazing street / graffiti / performance / installation artist Wayne Horse always knows to put the finger on the sore spot. In a time where street art is getting gentrified Wayne knows how to make things exciting again. These tape installations must have scared the living sh*t out of most people who woke up to a ‘broken’ windshield. Ah well, luckily it is only art!

“The graffiti that impressed me most has always been the one that destroys. The pieces that make it hard to start a discussion on graffiti being art, not vandalism. Tagged over commisioned works, Huge ugly tags by people who dont even write graffiti, paint splashed on a shopfront, the list goes on. Random acts of vandalism. A train compartement with slashed open seats, smashed in storefronts. The kind of trace a mob of hooligans might leave behind. Scenes like this carry such a lot of energy and stories. I am aware that just fucking things up is not the key to everything, but at least there is a strong impact that everyone understands.

There are few things more boring or uninspiring to me than most of nowadays streetart. It seems people are entering a prefabricated youth culture with all rules set up. How you dress, which version of illustrator you use to create your boring ass stickers, how to cut stencils and the mild revolutionary attitude your pieces should have, to blend in just fine.

There seems to be a career ladder of streetart fixed in many peoples heads. First do a little streetwork, mail it to the internet, get noticed, then do a gallery show, then do all sorts of embarrassing illustration jobs.

What really puts me off is the way people calculate on it.

This is supposed to be fun and adventure, not a carreer opportunity.

My problem with pure vandalism is that it does not match with my character. I do feel guilty if i mess something up that means a lot to another person. It is not about actually destroying anything, it is about the impact of destruction.

If its not your window you will probably not even notice it as a work.

And if it is yours your heart will sink into your pants untill you walk up close and realise it is nothing but tape.

In the end it is a very friendly work, as all i give the ones affected is a short shock followed by relief and a story to tell.”
