Jérémie Moussiad Kerouanton – aka DJ iZem– wanted to branch out a couple of years ago and traded France for Ireland. Now, the Paris-born DJ is heavily involved in what he describes as “an exciting bass/dub/reggae scene” in the city of Dublin. So while listening to Gilles Peterson his radio show all of the sudden he dropped a remix of Nina Becker’s “Do Avesso” done by the tireless music globe-trotter DJ iZem.
As a DJ he’s eager to break out from the restrictive confines of musical genres, abolish the language barriers and reassert the value of the musical heritage of urban and rural peripheral areas. Izem was raised in multicultural France during the golden era of the hip-hop culture, he broadened his influences along his many travels, his musical exchanges with his country of origin, Morocco and his trips to Latin America and the middle-east.
He recently dropped his free debut EP, an organic mixture of Post-Dubstep, Soul, Hip-Hop and Brazilian music. Big spaces, sub bass, jazz guitars and keys create this deep and spacious blend recorded in between Dublin, Paris, Morocco and Brazil. Next to that DJ iZem is also the co-founder and the music director of the multilingual internet radio station Groovalizacion. So when you sometimes come across a music artist like this it can really blow your mind. Not like “wow that’s cool”, but more like “Whoa were the hell have you been, I want to have your babies”. And I mean that in a non-psychopathic way haha. Keep an eye on this guy!
