Home interviews music Vettig & Morsig

vettigenmorsig

It tastes like butter, smells as new shoe polish and feels like a hang over on wednesday. Vettig & Morsig is famous in holland (and beyond) for their mixtape series. It has an inspector "go go" gadget feel to it. From one sound wave to another they are exploring the sonic spectrum and invites the listener with them on this musical journey. We at CFYE are huge fans of the collective. So we decided to hook them up with some server space to host all the mixtapes.Today, an interview with Milosz, one of the key players of the Vettig & Morsig crew.

"We know that we got a lot of potential so

the most important thing is to get people to find out about us"

For those who are unfamiliar with you and the collective, give us a brief background on the magic called Vettig & Morsig.
Vettig & Morsig brings you a tasty mix of fresh French bangers, the best of British Fidget and everything else that makes that makes your mouth water like rough Electro, Baile Funk, Kuduro and Baltimore. I personally always see Vettig & Morsig as a superdirty fastfood restaurant.
Back in early 2007, I made a mixtape and called it "Vettig & Morsig". I mixed it primarily for myself and for some of my friends on the internet. For some of those it was an eye-opener, probably because it showed that there was a lot more out there then just Crookers or Justice. I got some requests for a follow-up and this resulted in the formation of the DJ-crew we have today. On a monthly basis we release a brand new episode on our website and from now on, these will also be available at CFYE.

Who are your key players and what are their roles?
The Vettig & Morsig DJ-crew consists of 7 DJ's: Spektral, Cheveuxmaison, Milez, Tron, Man Eat DJ and Jizm (combined as Mightyfools) and myself, Milosz. One of the reasons behind the success is probably that we all put a different meaning to the term Vettig & Morsig. We add our own flavors but still we keep it as dirty and fat as possible. Spektral and Cheveuxmaison give it a more (melodic) French touch, Mightyfools and Milez are more into Fidget and Baltimore, Tron gives it a nice electro twist and I go for some rough electronic madness with sometimes a little Baile Funk to soothe your eardrums.

How did you come up with the tasty name?
When I was uploading the first episode I needed to come up with something that attracted attention, a name that made people wonder what to expect. For those who don't understand Dutch: Vettig & Morsig translates as Greasy & Dirty. The word morsig isn't word you hear very often. A lot of Dutch youngsters don't even know what it means. Looking back, I never imagined that the name I made up in a split-second would end up on flyers and t-shirts.

What drove you guys to come up with the concept?
The concept was created along the way. We didn't come up with something and then show it to the world. Maybe a bit of a chliché but it started with a lot of love for music and that's still the main driving force. And ofcourse,..without the support of our fans we never would have come this far!!

Tell us about your live show. What are you doing to make yourself stand out?
The great thing about our crew is that we all add our own flavors but still we keep it as dirty and fat as possible. So when we're out there as a crew you will never get bored hearing almost identical tracks for the whole night. We'll give you the dirtiest night you can imagine.

If Vettig & Morsig was a jungle animal what would it be?
Probably a monkey. At least some kind of energetic animal that is curious to new things.

"It's not all about the bass

but a nice big boom is always welcome."

In your mixes there are a lot of bass orientated genres, is it a must that the tracks you spin make the woofers go boom?
It's not all about the bass but a nice big boom is always welcome. Personally I select my tracks on the amount of rough energy they have. But of course, next to a some jacking stabs, a good rough synthriff a track will always need some rough cellulite removing bass to become really Vettig & Morsig.

If mixtapes where kitchen blenders, what kind of fruits would you mash up?
Fruit in a Vettig & Morsig shake? You can't be serious! I'd blend gasoline together with some frying fat, pork chops, French fries etc. But ok, to finish it off you could put a strawberry on the rim, haha.

The like 15 year old genres Baile funk and Kuduro are now starting to take off in the mainstream here in Europe. A good or a bad thing?
Does it? The only Kuduro I can think of is Buraka Som Sistema and ofcourse MIA uses a lot of Kuduro influences. Funk got more attention but I can't imagine it as a real mainstream genre. The risk with funk is that it is real easy to create with the result that every idiot with an MPC starts making shitty tracks like a funk remix of red riding hood or other tracks aimed at kids. This has been happening in Brazil for some years, though the real good funk carioca has never lost its popularity.

If we come to a Vettig & Morsig party what should we order at the bar to drink?
Get yourself a couple of beers (Dutch beer that is!) and get me a bottle of Southern Comfort.

How would you describe the current direction of Vettig & Morsig?
We know that we got a lot of potential so the most important thing is to get people to find out about us. Promotion is the big word. We will keep our focus on the Netherlands and Belgium with our promo and parties.

Why isnt there a mayonaise called "Vettig & Morsig" yet?
Hahaha,.. I like the idea! I'll add it to our to-do-list!

"but when girls start throwing panties

on stage you know you're doing great"

With so many new tracks hitting the net everyday how do you keep up?
Myspace, youtube but especially a lot of blogs. They are essential for finding those special remixes and new artist. It still makes it a time consuming hobby but I love doing it.

The last movie that made one of you cry like a little baby with pink clothes on?
That´s a hard one. Into the Wild (2007) gave me a lump in my throat at some moments. A movie that made me cry out of laughter was Riki-oh, the story of Ricky (1991). It´s a lowbudget action movie from China.

While DJing, how do you personally know when you're doing a good job?
When even the wallflowers are hitting the dancefloor you know you're doing ok, but when girls start throwing panties on stage, you know you're doing great.

If you have the opportunity to fill a swiming pool with anything you like, what would that be?
I'd go for naked blondes, or does it have to be a liquid? If it does I'd go for Licor 43, a smooth Spanish liquor. Or can I have both? Naked blondes bathing in Licor 43? Heaven!

Anything you wouldn't mix together as far as music or genres, or anything goes?
Vettig & Morsig beats go great together with eighties pop or silly tunes like they had on the Steak soundtrack. Mr. Oizo is a genius in creating those silly melodies. And eighties poprecords go great if the have a little glamrock or new wave edge. I once made a mashup of a Boys Noize track and Duran Duran - Wild Boys. It will be on the new tape*. They go great together.

Venue and crowd-wise, what was your best experience so far?
I loved the Vettig & Morsig crewparty, last june in Amsterdam. The ambience was great, the crew was spinnin' back-to-back-to-back-to-back. That was a lot of fun, for both the crowd as well as the dj's.

"The word around is that we are having talks with

Romain Gavras and SoMe for a V & M documentary"

Any DJ's on your wishlist you wanna team up with?
A couple of weeks ago I went to see Huoratron, a guy from Finland that brings a fantastic liveshow full of electronic madness. The crowd went mad but this guy was bouncing even harder. His beats are harder then we usually spin but if you like it rough, go check him out.

Besides spinning other peoples music, are you into the creating process as well?
I used to make 808 electrobeats, but I stopped doing it. V&M's Mightyfools are succesfull fidget-producers with support by all the big name dj's.
Spektral is also making some really cool tracks and remixes and Milez has released some trance and housemusic in the past and will keep on releasing some quality tunes in the future.

What moves you besides DJing and music?
A variety of things. I work fulltime as a manager at a retail market research company. Next to that, partying, Dutch blondes and Mediterranean liquor, of a combination of those really work for me.

Okay machine gun fire:

  • Cats or Dogs?
Dogs! I don't have one myself but I can behave like one.
  • City or Nature?
City. I'm used to it and I think I can't go without it. There's always something to do.
  • Squares or Sines?
Squares, because they've got sharp edges.
  • Uggs or Crocks?
Some girls can still look delicious on a pair of Uggs. Wearing Crocks makes even the hottest girls look horrible. But still, the man who came up with the idea made millions, so maybe I'm just jealous.
  • Public transportation or Horses?
They both stink, but because I need to use it to get to work I go with public transportation.
  • Bill or Steve?
    Steve.
  • Ray Ban or Stunna shades?
Stunna shades, although a Ray Ban Aviators are a classic.
  • Tea or Coffee?
I love coffee, as long as it has some quality. It's about the quality, not the quantity! The last time I drank a cup of tea was probably over five years ago.
  • McDonals or Burger King?
Burger King. I love a double whopper, though I prefer the local Dutch fastfood restaurant that serves ‘frikandellen speciaal' and fries with mayonnaise.

What are some of your current projects? Plans for the future?
Next to the monthly mixtapes, we've recently created 3 different Vettig & Morsig t-shirts, in cooperation with 1OAKcloathing.com
Plans for the near future are to throw some crewparties. When I've got more info on that, you'd be the first to know.

Any last thoughts, scoops or dirty rumours you wanna share?
The word is around that we are having talks with Romain Gavras and SoMe for a V&M documentary. I can't deny nor confirm it.

*The Boys Noize and Duran Duran - Wild Boys mashup actually isn't on #18. Luckily, the boys from Vettig & Morsig don't want to leave you wondering, so grab the whole thing right here:
