Home reviews events Zwart Licht - light up the spot

zwartlicht-1

When I was told that we were going to see Zwart Licht I asked "Who?". The answer was "They're the next big thing in Dutch rap". That, of course, made me very curious. So I went on YouTube and checked them out. Maybe my opinion's biased cause I started with 'Fair Play (Transformers Air Mix 1)', and anything with transformers in it can't go wrong with CFYE (except Michael Bay movies). But from the get go I think they might just be...

Thanks to the Sugarfactory in Amsterdam, CFYE was able to be present at a rocking rap evening with Nation of Elzi and Zwart Licht.

I always found Amsterdam crowds tough, at punk gigs, ska, rap, rock, reggae... But Nation of Elzi made it seem relatively easy to get the crowd moving. Profetic, Rome & Dangarus C managed to get the crowd up front & began with their laidback flow. Then they presented us with 2 beats and left it up to the crowd which beat they were going to end with during a freestyle session that reminded this particular writer why rap attracted him in the first place.

After more beer and a short wait, Akwasi -that came all the way from Maastricht by train- and Leeroy were there and Zwart Licht started to rock the place. HayZee's fresh beats made us jump and throw our hands up in the air while the lyrics of Akwasi and Leeroy where meaningful and raw. The energy level was great and even though the crowd was relatively small, they gave it their all. There were also a few others taking the mic during the Zwart Licht show and especially Skinto needs to be named. This guy had so much energy it seemed like he'd explode. Most definitely keep your eyes on him! All and all there was very little 'bitches and bling' but a lot of energy and good vibes. Unfortunately, the show was not very long because no-one got paid enough according to Zwart Licht. We say, next time, whoever pays these guys, give them more! In any way, CFYE will keep tabs on these great artists that deserve all sorts of exposure.
