Eska Art

By Arden de Raaij

We’ve been doing this CFYE for quite a while now and sometimes I realize that we haven’t featured loads of artists that we’ve been following from the get go. Luckily they haven’t forgotten about us and every once in a while we get a message from people that we’ve been admiring since our creative rebirth. One of these impressive artists we’ve been watching since years is UK based graffiti artist ESKA. He has a curved yet sharp 3d style which he applies with much variety. It’s hard to explain, but amazing to look at. “I don’t do drugs, I am drugs” – Eska.

When did you start writing?

My story in graffiti started in Poland when I was about 13 years old. I got my first graffiti mag featuring the Polish and foreign Graffiti scene. It contained photos and news that left a huge impression on me. I started to believe I could do the same thing; that’s when my tag Eska was born.

You’ve got a wild and pretty much unique 3d style, how did this develop?

At the beginning I was doing simple tagging and lettering in black white and chrome. After that I went from bubblestyle, blockbusters, chromes, characters to wild style. I’ve always tried to show my own style and not follow the mainstream. At the time the idea developed of creating 3d letters which introduced some new ground-breaking stuff. I was drawing 3d on paper for about 5 years before I decided I was good enough to move on to walls.

Do you still do things with TND? (The Next Dimension / Terrors new domain, shout to FarkFK and Trans1)

We used to pain regularly but haven’t had a chance to paint together in quite a while now, I hope we start rocking the city together again soon!

How do you feel about street art?

I’m okay with it, but it must be proper stencil work for me to like it. What I don’t like is that the police often arrest people for graffiti, but almost never for street art while it should be the same. There are great street ones out there who really live a life of street art, and there are those that came out yesterday shitting themselves doing illegal or not coming out to the streets at all. Those who just do canvasses and expect to be called a street artist and get respected like that too.

What artist should we and our readers absolutely check out?

If you could fill a swimming pool with everything you’d like, what would that be?

How is 2012 progressing for you?

It’s going alright. Not exactly the way I’d like to see it but I’m still very happy with my achievements so far! I’m in the middle of organizing the Splash Jam 2012, I was part of Upfest this year and did a few other graffiti jams / festivals. I’m planning to do my solo show but I’m not sure if that’ll happen this year. I was also invited to the Meeting of Styles Buenos Aires and other countries. I don’t usually plan things, it just happens naturally.

Is there anything specific you’d like to have done before the end of times?

Yes! I want to inspire people and I want them to know and remember my name/tag and my art, extending my life beyond my death!
