I’m Kristen Cates and I’m a 17 year old, senior in high school from Maine. I am a lover of the sea, tall trees, and quiet villages. I took an interest in photography when I was 13 years old. I live in the forest, so I would go adventuring, and photograph everything that spoke to me. This passion developed overtime into portraiture and then eventually conceptual. Whenever I take a photograph, I do it with intentions of telling a new fairy-tale to everyone who views it. I want a feeling to resonate with the viewers, whether that feeling be fear, delight, closure, anxiety, really anything. People tell me all the time “your photos creep me out” and I say right back “Good, that’s better than no feeling at all”. My pictures are meant to be read and analysed, not just simply looked at. Portraiture can really move mountains; body language intrigues me. Every body position in my photographs has a purpose: sadness in the eyes, flailing of the arms, standing or sitting, each one does something emotionally to a viewer.
